Using Off Camera Flash - Austin Wedding Photographer

There was a time when I was not crazy about using flash. The pictures always looked so flat. But off camera flash (ocf)? Now that is something that I totally changed my thinking! It adds depth and dimension to an image and makes it come alive. Here is a photo using one off camera flash. I though about adding another but liked the outcome on this shot.

If you have not tried it, you should. The only limitation in using flash is in how you think!

The Power Of An Image - Georgetown Event Photographer

Someone recently asked me why I liked photography so much. My reply was wrapped around the power of an image and the importance of preserving images in time. Here are a couple of photos that I took at The Celebration Church Christmas Eve service. It was very dark, as you might imagine. Maybe the darkest spot that I have ever photographed in public. I wanted to get a few shots that represented the mood of the candlelight part of the evening.

The "power of an image' is that it not only preserves a moment in time - it also tells a story. In the first image below, the flame is passed down the row candle to candle. The hands are so sweet and caring to help each other make sure that this a successful transition. I do not know who they belong to, but they are united in a single purpose.

All of the flames were passed down the rows. In the next image I love the looks on the children's faces as they take in the moment. The last little boy is looking back trying to understand. The mom looks down the row checking on her family. All of their faces are lit by the candle in front on them. That light represents hope for all of mankind...hope that is right in front of us all!

Honestly, I do not know any of the people in these images. I most likely will not see them again. But the images will stay with me forever. I can go back to Christmas Eve 2011 at Celebration Church through them and recall what a wonderful evening it was. That is the power of an image!www.phillipmarshallphotography.com

Alli and I love running around the Austin/Georgetown areas looking for super cool stores. Well, yesterday we found a treasure. It is called Blends, owned by Diane. This was taken while visiting my daughter and son-in-law last weekend. I love the way the light plays off of the homes, bounces off of the cars and driveways, and illuminates the power lines. Looks like suburbia to me! And the source of the light at the end of the street...is it from a softball game, tennis courts or golf course?? I'm not telling. Use your own imagination. After all, it is all happening in 'The Burbs'.

Ok, I admit it...I am a hit and miss blogger. Not that I do not want to. I just get busy doing other things.

Although I am a wedding and event photographer, I like photography in general and therefore I like to take pictures of variety of things in a variety of situations. So as I sat on my daughter's driveway in Waxahachie and started seeing firework explosions in the sky, how could I resist running into the house to grab my camera and mono pod? Here are some of the shots that I took over the rooftops across the street. This was part of the "Crape Myrtle Festival". Waxahachie touts itself as the 'crape myrtle capital'. I do not know about you, but fireworks like this are mesmerizing!

XL (Michael Vargas) at the Celebration Church Men's Conference - Austin Event Photography

I was blessed to shoot the Celebration Church Men's Conference last weekend. The theme of the event was "Fight". Yeah I was eager for this to start...and Friday night had a surprise opening. On stage were a shadow boxer and kick boxer. They were doing their thing- kicking and punching the air. The band was rocking a driving beat - then the follow spots hit the back of the auditorium to highlight XL (Michael Vargas). XL was wearing a boxer's robe. From that point XL began a hard thumpin' hip hop Christian rap. Ok I was pumped before, now I was beyond category juiced! The message of the song asked if we were ready for the fight.

Here's XL doing his stuff at the Men's Conference. If you get a chance to hear him, Do IT! Oh, and are you ready for "the fight"? Game on!

Good Bye To Winter

The Austin, Texas area generally goes from winter to summer with a dash of spring in between. Although I look forward to warmer sunny weather, with it's green leaves and blooming plants, I just want to say good bye to winter with a few parting images.

Very rare, but Austin did get snow in February. However it only lasted about a day.

Basically if we want to play in the snow then we are talking road trip. That is exactly what we did for Christmas, to one of my favorite spots on the planet - Santa Fe, New Mexico. The snow was just good enough for a fun time at Ski Santa Fe.

I do not know who this little guy is, but I loved his colorful lid! See ya later in the year Mr. Winter...

Katie C. - Senior 2011

To say that I have known Katie for a while would not even be fair. I have known her since she was a little girl. Now all grown...a senior in high school. I love shooting senior portraits! Senior year in high school is such a fantastic time in life. To be able to shoot these for Katie and her family was incredibly special to me. She is blessed with beauty and talent. Her percussion abilities are insane - and they will only get better as she begins life at a major university in their music program this fall. Best wishes, Katie, for a wonderful future!

On Friday February 18, 2011 teachers, staff, students and parents gathered at Pflugerville High School to rally about the proposed Pflugerville Independent School District's proposed budget/personnel cuts. It was an impressive turnout. Most impressive to me was the amount of seniors who came to support their teachers, counselors. and school programs. I asked Brandon, a senior, why they wanted to get involved. His answer matched his the sign he was holding..."schools matter".

Sky on Fire - Austin, Texas (Austin Event Photography)

The sky on Jan. 7 in Austin, Texas was setting up for a pretty nice sunset. I grabbed my camera off my desk (with a 55-200 4.5 lens attached) and scurried out to get a vantage point as the sun set. When the fireball dropped behind the horizon, the sky just light up in a blaze of glory. Looked like it was on fire!

Pflugerville High School Varsity 2010 Football Highlights - Leander Game

This was a nice sequence of plays that led to a Panther touchdown at the Leander game.

What a grab!

I always enjoy the head to head line up on the ball, especially at the goal line.

Moments later the Panthers punch it in for a touchdown. Incredible effort.

Pflugerville High School Varsity 2010 Football Highlights

From time to time I step over to the sideline or the back of the end zone for some football shots. Shooting sports is a lot of fun. In the future I will post more of these, but for now here are a few from the Pflugerville Panthers 2010 season.

This is a favorite. After punting, Westwood had pinned us on the 1 yard line. On the first play, Dean spun around handing off to Broussard, who went 99 yards for a touch down. I shot him going all the way down the field. It was really fun to watch him go!

Rockin' With The P-Crew on Friday Night (Austin Event Photography)

The crowd goes wild. You know that means the Panthers just scored. But if you had any doubt, hang on to your hat - the P-Crew is blasting off. It starts with the sound of a stampede straight out of the old west, then the flags start flapping like a norther just blew in. Off they go, a blue/gold flash down the track. They make a big loop and then the thunder gets louder as they approach. These warriors are the standard bearers for the P-Crew.

The stands are full of 'em. P-Crew Nation in black t-shirts. They live to see the flags.

What's that sound? The Panthers just scored!

All of this summer's practice and preparation, sweat and aching backs, and teamwork was put on the field Friday night at the Bowie game...and it all paid off in a great show. I missed some of those who graduated last year (like my son!) but there were plenty of new eager replacements to take their spots.

Sometimes I get so wrapped up in shooting that I do not take time to just listen, but not this time. I listened to some beautiful music played while quickly stepping left-right-forward-right-left-back. Great job band!

Sunset - Camping at Lake Georgetown

Recently my son and I were camping at Lake Georgetown. That evening we witnessed a fantastic sunset! When I am outside, this is my favorite time of day. All of nature calms down to watch the sun fade away. When you see this, there are only a few moments to get a picture...the sun sets very quickly. To get the shot of sun beams shimmering on the water I set up on top of the picnic table to get the angle. We were about 300 yds from the water.

The fiery sky soon yielded to a beautiful blue one with a sliver of the moon hanging out for the night. All in our world was at peace!

All Work And No Play???

August found us cooling our heals in Galveston. We were there a year ago, 2 weeks before hurricane Ike hit. I was not sure what it would be like a year later...but I was happy to see the island coming back together. Stewart Beach is rebuilt and Poretto Beach is being rebuilt bigger and better. Basically all of the sand was sucked out and redistributed to the north, so the city is having to truck it back down and pack the beaches again. Jetties are being rebuilt up and down the boardwalk. Although there is still a lot of work to be done it is looking good and remains a great place to hang out!

Candace - Bridal

We met Candace and her mom late one afternoon hoping to catch a little bit of relief from the heat of the day. Fortunately the weather cooperated a bit and we had slight breeze.

Candace is a beautiful girl, just like her mom - and full of personality, just like her dad. That really showed when she pulled out her cowgirl boots. She was ready to have some fun with this shoot!

Wow, it was a very busy and hot summer! Kim and Jordan met us in South Austin for their engagement shoot. They love the SoCo scene, as do I. Although it was very hot that day, these 2 were so "cool" to work with.

I was shooting through the fence behind home plate at my niece's softball game and was able to capture the hustle of her team mate sliding in to home. These little girls surely have a winning spirit! Winning comes to those who are willing to do what it takes to win...even sliding on rough ground in shorts. Two thumbs up on that effort - you are a winner!

I love sports and I love photography, so blending the two is like a Reese's peanut butter cup (I love those too!). Thus I jumped at an opportunity to watch my niece play softball and photograph her game. More pictures will follow of that...but her teammate pictured below caused me to recall a country song that goes "what if she's an angel". Believing that we are created in God's image, this little sweetheart reminded me of just how sweet and kind God is! That sweet expression never left her face the entire game. Honestly, I was blessed to be there that day and witness this. We should all enjoy and have as much fun doing the things we do!

I had a blast taking a few shots of the Pflugerville High Sschool Spring Band Camp Preview. This is where they give parent's a little glimpse of next year's marching season show. Now I am eager for Sept. to get here to see the real thing!
